Hillwalking Safety - Equipment and Gear to Pack

Aside from what you wear about your yourself whilst out hill walking, you also need to give thought to what you are actually going to carry as well. There are a number of essential items of equipment and gear that you need to carry whilst out on the hill, this includes :-


We'll look at these in more detail below. If you are considering something a bit more arduous, say in the high mountains of Scotland and Wales, then consider also bringing the following:-

You might also want to consider carrying a mobile phone with you. If you do, keep it dry, make sure the key lock is on and only use it in a dire emergency. You should where possible rely on yourself to "rescue" yourself when in difficulty.

This list is by no means definitive, some people feel they can cope with less, others feel comfortable carrying more.
