Welcome to the new look hillwalking!

Hillwalking Logo It's been a while in the making, but we think its been worth it. A new design (well it has been about 4 years since the last re-design) , a new searchable database of links to people who can help you get the best out of hill walking.

That includes hillwalker friendly B&Bs, hotels and hostels, through to guides and tour operators who can help make the most of your time and experience. Our aim is to make hillwalking.org.uk your one stop shop for finding out information on hillwalking from planning your trip through to finding the right place to stay that suits you.

We hope you enjoy the new look hillwalking.

Safety First and Last!

Picture of a Compass

How to look after yourself when hillwalking is one of those things that we all need to know. Indeed being self sufficient to many is part of the attraction of taking to the hills in the UK.

Taking a few simple precautions and "being prepared" can give you peace of mind and the confidence to know that you can cope if a problem arose. Have a look at our specially prepared safety section for some useful pointers on being safe on the hills.

A. Wainwright's Lakeland Fells

Wainwright's Lakeland Walks

A Wainwright was a prolific author of hillwalking guides and books, including his many guides to the Lake District Fells and a coast to coast walk.

Now the BBC and Watchdog's Julia Bradbury, have produced a series following Wainwright's pictorial guides around the Lake Land Fells. With the New Year why not turn over a new leaf (sorry!) and use these guides as the perfect excuse to get out there!

Landscape Photographer of the Year 2009 (Collection 3)

Landscape Photographer of the Year 2009 : Collection 3

'Take a view', the Landscape Photographer of the Year competition, is the brainchild of Charlie Waite, one of today's most respected landscape photographers. Together with the AA, he has created this prestigious competition and award with a total prize fund exceeding GBP 20,000, plus an eight-week exhibition at the National Theater and publication of "Landscape Photographer of the Year", the full-color book of best entries, which has been hugely successful in its first two years.

Britain's heritage is celebrated by people around the world and entries are welcome from everyone, whether resident in the UK or simply visiting, as long as the image is from the British Isles.

This book showcases the best pictures from amateur and professional photographers alike, from the third annual competition.

Top three books of the year 2008

Based on the most popular books on this site, its fair to say that you are all interested in getting or improving the skills needed for taking to the hills in the United Kingdom (and if you are lucky further afield!)
Navigation for Hillwalkers - Book Cover

Our most popular book of the year is "Navigation for Walkers" . According to The Times - "Will embolden even total duffers". Given 5 stars by people who bought it from Amazon, this book offers the perfect grounding in the essential skill of navigation whilst being easy to understand.

Our second most popular book for 2008. This book is the course syllabus for both the new Mountain Leader and the new Walking Group Leader Awards. Produced by collaboration between the authors at the Mountain Training Trust's centre, Plas y Brenin, and experts within Mountain Leader Training this book will give a valuable insight in to the skills required for summer time hill going in the UK
Hillwalking
Mountaincraft and Leadership - Book Cover
Still my favourite after all these years Eric Langmuir's "Mountaincraft and Leadership" is our third most popular book for 2008.
