Hillwalking

"Dark Shadows Falling" by Joe Simpson.  What Simpson uses as a starting point is an incident that happened in 1992, when a climber was left to die on Everest as members of his party made camp 30 yards from where he lay.  Simpson then goes on to question what would make one human being leave another to die alone.  Whilst you may think that Simpson is out to milk as much as he can from his experiences in "Touching the Void" where he was left for dead - he doesn't dwell for too long on his own experience, but it is fair to say that as a consequence he can offer a fairly unique insight into such situations.

There is a rather un-nerving section of the book (given that the hardback edition of this book was published prior to the death of Princess Diana) , when Simpson discusses photography by the press and morals associated with it, as he uses as an example a dying princess in a car wreck where the press shoot their pictures before offering assistance.

Overall, this is a very thought provoking book, which may make you question some of your own actions.
