Book Review - "Have you Seen the Glories?"

Hillwalking

This is really a book of two halves, as they would say.  The first part is an account by the author, John Fowler - formerly the arts editor of "The Herald", of his hillwalking days in Scotland.  He writes about the characters that he meets and the mountains that he has walked up.  He writes in what seems to be a very personal style and as the reader you almost feel that you are intruding at times.  This is especially so, as he writes about the building relationship between himself and Mary, a reoccurring personality in the first part of the book, to whom the title of the book is attributed.

The first part of the book stops abruptly, and the focus moves on to mainland Europe and further a field, as John travels on holiday and in his journalistic capacity as well. Again, we have more of John's personal writing as he gives us accounts of the mountains and characters that he meets.

This book is not "Touching the Void", as it won't keep you on the edge of your seat wondering what is going to happen next, instead it is a very gentle  and personal account of one person's love of the mountains.
