Hillwalking

This book charts the of the life of Alison Hargreaves- the first British woman to climb Everest without bottled oxygen, who was killed in a storm following her successful ascent of K2.

Harvey Maps Whilst the book covers her climbing and mountaineering life. It also details her relationship with her husband Jim Ballard, who encouraged her in to professional mountaineering as a means to make ends meet for the whole family.  Suffice to say, I didn't come away with that good an impression of him - it is interesting to note that he is not credited in the authors' acknowledgments at the front of the book.

Travel The book skirts around one of the major controversies, as such, that surrounded Alison Hargreaves in life and death and that was the morality of a mother risking her life in the pursuit of her sport - e.g. society doesn't condemn a father who takes part in high risk sports, but a woman achieving the same as a man is criticised by the majority of society.  A discussion into how her peers thought of this at the time would have been worth while.

An okay read, that casts more light on to the life of a person who died too soon.  It perhaps could have done with more picture plates, as it only has 8 pages worth, given the Alison Hargreaves was a mountaineer, there should have been more mountain photographs available.
