Disney's Spanish Inspiration - A Visit to Segovia Spain (Page 1)
|
An hour from the capital of Spain , Madrid , lies one of its better kept secrets – Segovia . Sounding like a province of a Yugoslav republic, Segovia is over a thousand meters above sea level – so whilst it can be clear skies and sun, you will still have wrap up warmly in all but the summer months.
For a person, like myself, who likes to potter around the place with no set agenda, Segovia is the place to be. It is a small compact city, but don’t let its relative size put you off, for there are many attractions worthy of your attention. A lovely site in the early evening, when the light casts shades of pink is the 800-metre long Roman Aqueduct, which dates back to the first century AD, and the time of Emperor Trajan. The remarkable fact about this viaduct is that no cement or mortar was used in its construction; it’s only the weight of the stones above on the stones below that keep it all together. Sadly with the increase of traffic and the vibrations caused by it the future of the viaduct is uncertain.
Dominating the skyline of the City is Segovia Cathedral. It was the last cathedral in Spain to be built in the grand Gothic style, and arguably the last in Europe . For all its exterior grandeur, it a very plain and simple church inside. It is worth paying the two hundred and fifty pesetas to have a look around the museum, which can be found in the cloisters of the cathedral. Goto Next Page | Goto Travel Home |
